Zinus Powers BC Ferries’ Shift to Hybrid-Electric Ships: Norwegian Zinus will provide charging solutions for BC Ferries’ new diesel-electric ferries through a contract with Damen Shipyards. The ZPP800 tower cable management system will enhance quayside charging, supporting four Island-class ferries in Canada. These vessels, serving key routes, will benefit from efficient electric power, aligning with BC Ferries’ sustainability goals. Delivery is set for 2025-2026.
World’s Largest Electric Ferry Built in Australia: Incat Tasmania is constructing the world’s largest fully battery-powered ferry for Buquebús, set to operate between Argentina and Uruguay by 2025. Equipped with Wärtsilä’s 40MWh battery propulsion system and waterjets, the ferry will carry 2,100 passengers and 225 cars. Wärtsilä’s cutting-edge power systems will deliver four times more energy than current electric ships, marking a significant step in sustainable maritime transport.
Rotterdam Tests Mobile Shore Power for Ships: The Port of Rotterdam successfully piloted moveable battery containers providing shore power to Cargow’s sea-going ships, reducing emissions at the Steinweg Beatrix Terminal. The project, led by Zero Emission Services (ZES), demonstrated the potential of mobile shore power for high-energy-demand vessels, where fixed connections are unavailable. Despite its success, the solution is costly, and future use is expected only in areas with grid limitations.
Sweden Launches First Onshore Power for Cruise Ships: Ports of Stockholm has inaugurated Sweden’s first onshore power facility for international cruise ships, reducing emissions and noise at berth. The new facility, powered by renewable energy, allows ships to switch off engines, with 45% of cruise calls now able to connect. Part of a Baltic Sea collaboration, the initiative aims for zero port emissions by 2040.
Port of Barcelona Powers First Ship with Renewable Energy: The Port of Barcelona has connected the MSC Mette, a 24,000-TEU containership, to its new OPS, delivering 100% renewable energy. The OPS, custom-designed to support terminal operations, supplied 103,200 kWh during the ship’s three-day stay. This marks a significant step in the port’s Nexigen plan for decarbonization, aiming to reduce emissions from ship engines at berth.
