This high-level planning is matched by on-the-ground milestones, from San Diego commissioning the nation's first shore-powered RoRo vessel to NYC confirming shore power in its Manhattan Cruise Terminal master plan. The vessel side is witnessing an unprecedented wave of new electric and hybrid ferries, from the third vessel conversion on the Öresund route and two new ferries for Norway's UNESCO fjords to a new fleet for Auckland and commuter boats for Lyon. With technology providers like ShoreLink introducing compact CMS solutions and Echandia upgrading the world's first long-range e-ferry, the maritime sector's electric transition is now operating at full scale.   • Rotterdam's shore power strategy: The Port of Rotterdam presents its updated Shore Power Strategy 2025-2035. The port aims to make shore power standard for most shipping by 2030. It currently has over 100 installations with a total capacity of over 43 MW. READ MORE

  • San Diego's first shore-powered RoRo: The Port of San Diego and Pasha announce the first US shore-powered RoRo vessel. The MV Jean Anne will use grid power instead of diesel while at berth. A $6.6 million shore power plug was installed at the National City Marine Terminal. READ MORE

  • SOHAR's port vision: SOHAR Port and Freezone outlines its vision as a sustainable hub for Oman. The strategy includes shore power for its container terminal. It expects 30-50% of container ship calls to use shore power by 2030. READ MORE

  • NYC Master plan confirms shore power: NYC's master plan for the Manhattan Cruise Terminal includes shore power. The plan includes an initial $20 million commitment for the infrastructure.   • Norwegian Indian hybrid tankers: Norwegian firm Rederiet Stenersen orders six hybrid chemical tankers from India. The $220 million order includes an option for six additional vessels. The design allows for battery capacity to be upgraded to 5,000 kWh. READ MORE

  • ONE adopts shore power in China: Ocean Network Express is adopting shore power at two major ports in Shenzhen. The carrier will use a mobile shore power box at Yantian and Shekou ports. This will allow ONE vessels to achieve zero emissions during port stays. READ MORE

  • Oceanco's hybrid-electric superyacht: The 111-meter hybrid-electric superyacht Leviathan is delivered to Gabe Newell. The yacht features a 5.5 MWh battery system for silent nighttime operation. It is owned by Oceanco shareholder Newell and will support scientific research. The vessel is powered by two ABB Azipods and represents a people-centric design. READ MORE

  • Öresund's third electric ferry: The ferry HAMLET is being converted to battery power for the Helsingborg-Helsingør route. The conversion will add a 2,800 kWh battery system from Echandia. It will become Öresundslinjen's third fully electric ferry on the route. READ MORE

  • UPO orders hybrid CSOVs: Vard begins construction on a new hybrid CSOV for joint venture UPO Holdings. The 88-meter vessel is optimized for Taiwan’s offshore wind conditions. It will feature a hybrid propulsion system and accommodate 120 personnel. Delivery of the first of two planned CSOVs is scheduled for 2027. READ MORE

  • Norwegian fjord E-Ferries: Vestlandske is converting two ferries for zero-emission operation in the Geirangerfjord. The project will add 17 MWh of battery packs to the ferries JOTUNHEIM and HJØRUNGAVÅG. Electrification will cut emissions by roughly 2,600 tonnes of CO2 annually. The ferries are slated for zero-emission operation from the start of the 2026 season. READ MORE

  • Auckland's new electric ferry fleet: Auckland Transport is replacing its aging fleet with four new electric and hybrid ferries. Two all-electric ferries are being built by McMullen & Wing with a 200-passenger capacity. Two larger 300-passenger electric-hybrid ferries are being built in Whanganui. READ MORE

  • French river electric ferries: Two new electric commuter ferries enter service on the Saone River in Lyon, France. Le Gone and La Fenotte each carry 75 passengers and are built from aluminum. The ferries operate fully electric, with diesel generators for backup. Two more identical ferries are scheduled for delivery in April 2026. READ MORE

  • ShoreLink's compact CMS Solution: ShoreLink introduces CruiseLink Mobile S, a compact cable management system. It is designed for cruise ports with limited space to advance shore power adoption. The self-propelled system can be operated by a single person for high efficiency. The company's products are almost entirely developed and sourced within Europe. READ MORE

  • Echandia to power electric ferry ELLEN: Echandia will supply a new 3.2 MWh LTO battery system for the ferry ELLEN. The system will replace the original NMC batteries, enabling a 15-year lifetime. It supports fast charging in around 25 minutes, an improvement of 10 minutes. READ MORE

  • Lyman-Morse to build US e-Ferries: Lyman-Morse wins a $3 million contract to build three solar-powered ferries for MeVa Transit. The 33-foot catamarans will use twin 150-hp electric outboards and rooftop solar. Each vessel will carry 18-22 passengers on the Haverhill–Newburyport route. The first vessel is expected for demonstration runs in the summer of 2026.
