Italy accelerates green ports with Cavotec shore power award: Cavotec has secured EUR 7 million in shore power orders for Italian ports, driving sustainable operations for cruise and container vessels. These projects, set for delivery by 2026, aim to cut emissions and enhance air quality in Tuscany, southern Italy, and western Mediterranean ports. READ MORE
Germany's first fully electric ferry "E-Kat" completes trials: The fully electric ferry E-Kat, built by Damen Shipyards for AG Reederei Norden-Frisia, has successfully completed acceptance trials on January 15, 2025. Designed to connect Norddeich with Norderney in just 30 minutes, the aluminum-built ferry is powered by two 600 kW electric motors and an advanced 1,800 kW battery system by EST-Floattech. READ MORE
IACS Onshore Power Supply Systems recommendation: The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has issued Rec. 182, a detailed guideline for implementing Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems. It covers ship-side requirements, connection protocols, testing procedures, safety measures, and maintenance plans. The recommendation supports IMO guidelines, aiding shipowners and operators in adopting OPS to reduce emissions and enhance global decarbonization efforts. READ MORE
World’s largest battery-powered cargo ships to use rotor sails: Norwegian shipping firm Berge Rederi and Norsepower are collaborating on two emission-free, battery-powered cargo ships designed to handle harsh Northern Sea weather. Built in China by Jiangsu SOHO Marine Heavy Industry, the 130-meter vessels feature 23.5 MWh batteries, Norsepower Rotor Sails™, and green technologies. Launching in late 2025, they’ll transport marble along Norway’s coast, cutting annual emissions by 9,000 tons of CO2 and 200 tons of NOx. READ MORE
Svitzer orders e-Tug: Svitzer has commissioned a battery-powered tug from Sanmar Shipyards for towage and emergency response in the Øresund Strait between Denmark and Sweden. The 25-m ElectRA Dynamo-class tug will feature a 1,818 kWh energy storage system, zero-emission operation, and backup diesel generators. It is set to enter service in H2 2025. READ MORE
Grant awarded to Wallenius Wilhelmsen and EDR for Shore Power: The Flemish government has granted €5.53m to Wallenius Wilhelmsen for a shore power project in Zeebrugge and Engine Deck Repair (EDR) for a similar project in Antwerp. These initiatives, under the REPowerEU plan, aim to cut 6,217 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. READ MORE
Ampereship, Ostseestaal to build fully electric ferry for Helgoland
Ampereship and Ostseestaal will develop a 15.2m, fully electric ferry for Helgoland, replacing the Witte Kliff. The ferry, with a 1,175 kWh battery and capacity for 95 passengers, showcases sustainable innovation on Germany's coast.
