Flying Electric Ship Could Revolutionize NY Commuting: Swedish tech company Candela showcases its groundbreaking electric hydrofoiling ship, the Candela P-12, on the Hudson River. This 30-passenger vessel "flies" above the water on hydrofoils at speeds of up to 30 mph while using 80% less energy than conventional ships. The P-12 boasts a range of 40 nautical miles on battery power and is the world's fastest electric vessel with long-range capabilities. Candela aims to transform congested urban transport, offering faster and cleaner alternatives to traditional ferries, which are known to emit seven times more CO2 per passenger mile than gasoline cars.
San Francisco Embarks on Zero-Emissions Ferry Revolution: San Francisco is pushing ahead with its ambitious Rapid Electric Emission Free (REEF) ferry program to transition its fleet to zero-emissions. Swedish company Echandia has been chosen to supply the battery systems, marking a pivotal step in the project. The first phase will introduce three 150-passenger and two 400-passenger battery-electric ferries by 2026, aimed at transforming water transit across San Francisco Bay, including routes to Oakland and Alameda. These ferries will be powered by battery systems scheduled for delivery in Q2 2025, with a new electric charging float being designed for rapid charging at the Downtown terminal.
Rising Concerns Around LNG & Boil-Off Gas in Maritime Regulations: As LNG emerges as a key fuel under FuelEU Maritime, managing boil-off gas (BOG) poses significant challenges. BOG, naturally formed in cryogenic tanks, impacts GHG intensity calculations differently depending on how it is handled—whether it's used as fuel, reliquefied, or vented. Onshore power supply (OPS) further complicates matters, as periods of non-operation could increase unaccounted methane emissions, potentially undermining the environmental gains expected by 2030.
